Before the Holocaust Museum

This was definitely one of the top choices on my to-do list of visits. The Holocaust has always been an interest of mine. Ever since middle school years when one of the chapter books we read in 7th grade was, “The Diary of Anne Frank” I have been hooked. I have read the book many times and have seen various movies that deal with the times of the Holocaust. I’ve always wanted to go to a museum but never knew of any close to my area. I even wanted to go to the actual city where some of it took place and visit the attic that Anne Frank stayed at along with her family. I always knew that would not happen anytime soon since that is miles and miles away from me.
This was the first place I Googled when I was searching for different places to visit. I found out that there is one in San Antonio but there is an even bigger one in Houston. I went onto the website http://www.hmh.org/ and further researched any info I can find on the museum. The Holocaust Museum is located in the Houston’s Museum District. They are open 7 days a week with various times and are closed for certain holidays such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving, and etc. Admission into the museum is free but donations are welcome. They have many different exhibits throughout the year and the ones currently at the museum based off what the website says are:

1.         1. Displaced Persons: Photographs by Clemens Kalischer
2.        2. Passage to a New Life-Highlights from the Collections of Holocaust Museum Houston
3.        3. Celebrating 15 years of History at Holocaust Museum History

Something very interesting that I found on the website is how the museum offers a library named, “The Laurie and Milton Boniuk Resource Center.” This is another thing I am looking forward to looking at and will share my experiences in the upcoming posts. I really hope there is a way I can get a tour to learn a lot more from someone has more information and experience with this information. On the website, it states they do group tours of 10+ people so don’t know how that’s going to happen when it being just my brother, son, and I. Lets see if I can pull a few strings. :)
I really hope to learn more on what happened and why it all happened. I know it involved Hitler and him becoming leader of Germany but there is so much more behind the scenes to what happened to these people. So many other bad things went on during this horrific crisis. I am very very sensitive so this really touched heart when hearing about the brutal killings of women, men, and children along with beatings for the fun of it. I hope to learn a lot more than what I know going in because until this day, you still have racism which was the main cause of the Holocaust, everyone being against Jews.
